Who went from home makers to home improvers?

Three full time mums Kerrie Ormondroyd, Julie Milburn and Laura Patten wanted to get their careers back on track.

With an interest in the construction trade, Kerrie Ormondroyd, Julie Milburn and Laura Patten heard about the Let’s Twist course at Bradford College which is specialised to encourage women into careers which were traditionally regarded as male trades.

The course allowed them to sample the variety of construction trades which allowed them to choose the areas they were more interested in. Kerrie said “College have been brilliant. They were supportive of all of us, encouraging us throughout the course and really understood our home and family commitments.”

On successfully completing the Let’s Twist course, the three students decided to pool their construction skills and set up a new business through Bradford Kickstart, called ‘Women at Work’ which went on to win a Bradford Kickstart Enterprise competition in 2008. ‘Women at Work’ now goes from strength to strength with many jobs coming in from personal recommendations of satisfied customers. “Our services are ideal for those who feel more comfortable having work done in their home by an all-female team.

To those who are thinking about starting a course at College, Kerrie said, “Through experiences with College and our new business, I’ve proved to myself that it is possible. The right career is out there for you. I’d encourage anyone to give it a go!
